Saajan is a story of love, passion and betrayal set against the backdrop of the early 1990s. It portrays the lives of ordinary Indians from Dalal Street to Arthur Road Jail. He works on the floor of Dalal Street, Bombay's stock exchange and doesn't look like a person who has any financial concerns. What Hardin has is a heart of gold; he is the proverbial good Samaritan who helps friends and relatives out of difficult situations. Hardin falls in love with a simple and sincere girl, Paresh (Mallika) and wants to marry her. But without much ado, Paresh's father (Nana Patekar), a rich tycoon, gets her married to his much younger son, Vikram (Manish Paul). Vikram and Paresh live in the lap of luxury; while Hardin lives on the street along with his dog. Vikram is happy that he has bagged the girl of his dreams while moneylenders are happy for increased interest rates on their loan agreements. Vikram and Paresh have a child and they both die in a freak accident. Now, the drama begins! The shrewd moneylenders take away all the property that was once Vikram and Paresh's. Hardin is caught in the middle of all this. Compelled by circumstances, he starts to spend time with his earlier love interest Kavita (Neha Dhupia). It is now his fight to get back what belonged to someone else but now belongs to him as hard as he tries, he can't seem to pull it off. Enter a powerful don who takes up Kavita's case for his own reasons.
